The 32nd Americas Cup 2007
Makes history...
The seventh race of the 32nd America’s Cup Match by Louis Vuitton in Valencia was to be competed in the strongest winds since the start of the final duel. The thermal southeasterly wind reaching peaks of 18 knots on the race day. The race was going to be the most tense and exciting of all, Alinghi had come from behind in the previous race to gain a 4-2 advantage over the kiwis, a win now for the Swiss team would secure the title for a 2nd time and team New Zealand with the hope of a nation on their shoulders
needing a win to keep their dreams alive. But no one could have predicted the race that was about to happen.
Following a perfectly even start, Alinghi made a superb attacking maneuver giving them a 7 second lead at the first turn, but then an even better overtaking maneuver by the Kiwis saw them take a lead into the 2nd turn. The 3rd leg saw Alinghi take the initiative and yet another strong attacking move saw the kiwis receive a penalty flag and the Swiss gain the lead at the 3rd turn which surely meant a sweet run home for the holding champions Alinghi.
But fate was to change, the team New Zealand were more alert to the rapidly changing wind which knocked the Swiss team for six, losing their spinnaker and finding themselves almost “stopped” in the water with just meters left to finish, the Kiwis took full advantage and started powering down to the finish line, they still had to make their penalty turn, could they gain a big enough advantage before the Swiss regain their rhythm?
Alinghi in chaos but limping on, New Zealand just meters from the finish line into their penalty turn, could they get round in time, the Swiss limping ever closer and now regaining speed, it’s the closest finish in history… 3..2..1.. And Alinghi take the
line first with just a second to spare over the desperat
e Kiwis, the Americas Cup stays with the Swiss team Alinghi for a second time.
The 33rd Americas Cup has a record 19 teams entered and promises to be bigger and better than the 32nd which has rightfully earned its place in the history books. The first regattas will be held in the waters of Valencia in July and October 2009 with the Final of the 33rd Americas Cup to be held in 2010.

Nineteen teams entered to race for the 33rd America's Cup in 2010
18-12-2008
The Americas Cup Management have announced the entry
list for the 33rd America's Cup that includes 19 teams,
eight of which are new entries. All of the 32nd America's
Cup challengers have re-entered, bar one.
Aside from the Defender, Alinghi and the Challenger
of Record, Desafío Español, a total of 21 teams presented
a Notice of Entry and 17 were accepted.
The 33rd America's Cup schedule is for two pre-regattas in
Valencia in 2009, the first in July and the second in October,
plus the Club Náutico Español de Vela annual regatta in
November, followed by an America's Cup Match in 2010.
Brad Butterworth, Alinghi team skipper, comments on a
very exciting fleet: “Having 19 teams from 12 countries
entered for the 33rd America's Cup is a clear expression
of the huge worldwide interest in the competition.
It’s fantastic to see such an international fleet with
newcomers such as Russia. It is also significant that all
but one of the teams from the previous edition have
entered again. We will continue to work together with
these challengers to make the 33rd America's Cup a
success...”
